Mirra Andreeva reached the US Open quarterfinals for the first time on Monday, September 7. The No. 5 seed overcame Anastasia Potapova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in Louis Armstrong Stadium in a match that ended with concern for her opponent.
The comeback required resilience on serve. In the second set, Andreeva saved a break point that would have put Potapova 4-2 ahead. In the deciding set, she fought off two more break points before holding for a 3-1 lead, according to the WTA match report.
The closing moments followed a fall by Potapova on the first point of the final game, while serving at 3-5. The Austrian received treatment on her left knee and returned with it strapped. She played the remaining three points, all won by Andreeva: the match finished with a completed scoreline.
Andreeva had helped her opponent back to the chair and called for ice. After two hours and 27 minutes of tennis, they shared an embrace. The winner spoke about their friendship and how difficult it was to see a friend finish the contest that way.
At 19, and already the Roland Garros champion this season, Andreeva remains in contention for another Grand Slam title. Her next opponent will come from the meeting between Coco Gauff and Iva Jovic, scheduled for Monday's night session.
